What was the first mosque built in Madinah?

Many people would think that it would be Masjid An-Nabawi however it is actually Masjid Quba which is only roughly 4km away. There are many virtues of this Mosque and its people. Here are some of its virtues.

First Masjid in Madinah

This Masjid was where Rasulullah ﷺ stayed for around 14 days while waiting for Ali Ibn Talib before moving into the main city of Madinah. He set the foundation of the masjid and this was the first masjid established in Madinah

Rasulullah ﷺ used to visit Masjid Quba frequently

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Dinar: Ibn 'Umar said, "The Prophet used to go to the Mosque of Quba every Saturday (sometimes) walking and (sometimes) riding." 'Abdullah (Ibn 'Umar) used to do the same

Allah has praised the mosque and its people

Many scholars have said that the Ayah below is referring to Masjid Quba and its people. "There are also those ˹hypocrites˺ who set up a mosque ˹only˺ to cause harm, promote disbelief, divide the believers, and as a base for those who had previously fought against Allah and His Messenger. They will definitely swear, "We intended nothing but good," but Allah bears witness that they are surely liars. Do not ˹O Prophet˺ ever pray in it.

Certainly, a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. In it are men who love to be purified. And Allah loves those who purify themselves."  Surah At-Tawbah 9:108
